Job Description

 Employee’s Responsibilities and Areas of Focus

The Youth Minister will collaborate with the Pastor, staff and volunteers to manage the youth programs and family life activities at HTLC. Specific focuses of this position include directing Middle School and High School Youth Group Ministries and working closely with the Children’s Ministry as well as assisting in coordinating community life activities at HTLC such as planning social events and dinners, welcoming new families, and recruiting volunteers for various missions.     

The position reports to the Pastor and collaborates with various committees and leadership, especially Children Youth and Family Ministries and the Council to identify, prioritize and address activities that further our mission. This position functions within a team with other staff and lay volunteers.

Children and Youth Ministries 

  • Collaborate with the Pastor, Children Youth and Family Ministry (CYF) volunteers, and youth ministry assistants to manage and participate in Children’s Ministry, Confirmation, and senior High Youth programs
  • Work with Pastor, Office Manager, CYF, and leadership to ensure that HTLC follows church policy and best practices for adults working with children and youth
  • Build appropriate interpersonal relationships with children, youth, and families of all ages
  • Plan and coordinate logistics for weekly High School Youth Group and monthly family activity
  • Plan the annual summer youth trip
  • Organize, attend, and lead youth trips, assuring adequate adult supervision
  • Assist Pastor and staff with communications (emails, mailings, Tempo, social media etc.)
  • Supervise and collaborate with Children’s Ministry Assistant and CLU student Youth Interns

Community Life

  • Manage committees and ministry teams to make sure they are staffed and evaluated. Create and implement a succession plan for critical leadership roles.
  • Expand the Welcome Ministry team. Work with committees and ministries to integrate new families or inactive people into the life of the church community through youth groups, service, worship, ministry teams, or other points of connection. Direct a twice-yearly reception of new members.
  • Work with other staff and Council to assist in and furthering HTLC programs and goals

Requirements

This an exempt position with a salary range of $50,000 to $55,000 a year, depending on experience. The position qualifies for Medical and PTO benefits as outlined in the Employee Handbook. Approximately 30 hours are expected for management of the youth programs and ministries and 10 hours for other HTLC programs and ministries. There is overlap between functions. Sunday mornings and some evening meetings are required; the Director must be available for flexible scheduling coordinated in advance with the Pastor.

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience including non-profit, church work, or volunteer activities with demonstrated success in organizational management is required. Good group communication skills are required as are computer (word processing, spreadsheets, Powerpoint) and social media proficiency (Messaging, FB, Instagram, Twitter). Church membership is not mandatory, however an understanding of the welcoming spirit of Christian love and service through experience or course work in history of religion or Lutheran Theology is important. Fluence in Spanish a plus.

Reliable transportation and a valid CA driver’s license are required. The church will reimburse documented business miles monthly at the current IRS rate for church-related miles.
