THEA BOOK CIRCLE April 25 We will discuss: The Library Book by Susan Orlean Monday, April 25, 2022 at 7:00 PM Meet in the church library Susan Orlean re-opens the unsolved mystery of the most catastrophic library fire in American history, and delivers a dazzling homage to a beloved institution – our libraries. On the morning of April 29, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angeles Public Library. Raging through the stacks, the fire reached 2000 degrees and burned for more than seven hours. It was the largest library fire in the history of the United States: it destroyed four hundred thousand books and damaged seven hundred thousand more, and shut the library down for seven years. The mystery remains: did someone purposefully set fire to the library—and if so, who? Weaving her life-long love of books and reading with the fascinating history of libraries and the sometimes-eccentric characters who run them, award-winning journalist and New York Times bestselling author Orlean presents a mesmerizing and uniquely compelling story. With her signature wit, insight, compassion and talent for deep research, she investigates the legendary Los Angeles Public Library fire to showcase the larger, crucial role that libraries play in our lives, and reveals how these buildings provide much more than just books and are needed now more than ever.

DISCUSSION GROUP ON FAITH AND ABORTIONMay 17, 2022, 7:00pm – May 18, 2022, 8:00pmTake meeting notesStart a new document to capture notesDescription:DISCUSSION GROUP ON FAITH AND ABORTION via ZoomTuesday, May 17 from 7:00pm -8:00pmWith news on the possibility of Roe vs. Wade being overturned flooding our airwaves, the topic of abortion is once again one of national debate. Many people have strong opinions on the issue and a variety of life experiences or beliefs that shape their feelings. What might our faith say about this subject? I would like to invite anyone who is interested in having a discussion on this topic to join me on Zoom Tuesday evening May 17 from 7:00pm to 8:00pm. This is a time not to argue or try to convince each other who is right or wrong, but rather it is a time to listen to one another, to feel like we can safely share opinions, feelings, or stories in a respectful environment, and discern together how our faith mightcall us to respond to such national news. Below is a statement from our presiding Bishop from 2019 on the topic of abortion and our church’s social statement. This statement is not meant to be a doctrine, but a source of guidance as Lutherans wrestle with this issue. It will also help guide our discussion. https://www.elca.org/News-and-Events/7976https://www.elca.org/faith/faith-and-society/social-statements/abortion

You'll be asked to consider your own story and the places God has led you. In doing so, you might also be surprised by the power of relationship and hospitality to inspire change." (Gather p. 22) If you are unable to join us on Saturday, you may join the Synod Zoom study on Monday, May 23 at 7:00. Email Karil Drake at karildrake@yahoo.com if you would like the link to the study. Dixie Hanson
