The month of August marked the 75th anniversary of the dropping of an atomic bomb on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan at the end of World War II. While the bombings helped to bring a swift end to the war, they also ushered in the atomic age and the horrific new category of nuclear weapons which have haunted the world ever since. Before the bombs were dropped, very few people really knew just how destructive they would be. The project had been developed under so much secrecy, not even those pilots who would be involved in deploying the bombs realized just what kind of power they were dealing with.
