Before his final journey to the cross, Jesus took some time to prepare his followers for his departure from them. He knew that the finality of his death would impact them greatly and he wanted to provide some comfort to them as well as an assurance that, even though he would no longer be with them in flesh and blood, God would not abandon them. In the book of John, Jesus has a meal with his disciples and tells them that he will not leave them alone. He says, “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever…You know the Holy Spirit, for it dwells with you and will be in you.” Jesus gives his followers the Holy Spirit as a sign and presence that he is still with them wherever they might be.
