Growing up in the country, I came to really enjoy the outdoors. I loved being able to explore and discover new rocks to climb, new trails to follow and new vistas to see. As I got older, I went more into the mountains and came to have both a healthy respect and deep appreciation for areas designated as wilderness. They were places where I could feel my soul expand while experiencing a connection with God’s creation.
I am aware, however, that the image of the wilderness has historically not always been a positive one in certain cultures. In white European and American culture, the wilderness has often been portrayed as a scary, almost evil place. Think about how many fairy tales have a wicked witch or monster that lives in the woods. The wilderness was a place where you could get lost.
