February 2020

I am not sure if St. Paul would have been a big fan of Valentine’s Day. As February 14 looms ahead and stores are stocking up on heart-shaped cards and candy, the focus is on a kind of romantic ideal with a one-on-one soulmate who will somehow fulfill all our relationship dreams. While I am a fan of a good love story as much as anyone might be, the image of “happily ever after” we find in pop culture movies and television shows can give us an inaccurate impression of what true love really is. It is this impression that can get heightened on a day like Valentine’s Day which can lead to unrealistic expectations and pressures for our one true love to meet all of our needs.
